Anchors Away Day 1: Science & Social Studies

Today's anchor charts are all science and social studies! I don't teach social studies :( so mine will just be science. We have only made a few so far--here they are:

Electricity: (we just did a basic KWL chart)

For both of the energy charts the kids completed the same chart in their science journal as we did one together:

We just started this one at the end of last week, so not much is on it yet. The kids will add new examples to it as we progrss through the unit (pictures from magazines, newspaper clippings, drawings, words, etc. are all acceptable).

The students are welcome to add to any chart at anytime during the unit.

Alright, it's your turn!! Link up with your awesome science ans social studies anchor charts!

Science Week! Day 3: Freebies (...only a few weeks late...)

Yes, this is WAAAYYYYYY late! Science Week was back in September and I kinda dropped off on postings mid-week. I wanted to post but Grad School kept me from it. :/ So here is Day 3: Freebies!!

I already posted my science notebook/journal rubric to my Teachers Notebook store, but in case you missed it you can download it by clicking on the picture below:

I taught science for my first three years, did not last year, and am teaching it again this year. I have loads of resources that I use BUT a lot of them are not ready to share because I haven't used them or even looked at them in a while. They also need to be updated. However, I looked through and found something ready to share with you!

Like many of you, in order to ensure that my science groups are being fair and that each student has a chance to participate in the activities, I use role cards. Each student is assigned a specific role for the activity. This has REALLY helped my students (especially those prone to arguing). I know this concept is nothing new to you!

I offered these as a 24-hour freebie! You can now click on the picture to view the item in my store. :D

Trick or Treat Math Bulletin Board

I am alllll about the interactive bulletin boards this year! My student teacher and I came up with this one. We have done a few "how many ways can you make this number" activities so far this year. We decided to take the concept and put in on a bulletin board. Each treat bag on the board has a number underneath it. All of the "candy" in one bag shows a number sentence for the corresponding number. The number sentence can be as simple or as complex as the student wishes. For instance, if he/she chose 89, the sentence could be 80 + 9 = 89 OR it could be 100 - 20 + 9 = 89 OR it could be 40 x 2 + 9 = 89. The possibilities are endless!!! I challenge them to come up with a sentence that includes multiple operations  and more than 2 or 3 steps.

Here are two student work samples:

Below you will find the instructions, part of the title (I used bulletin board letters for "Trick or Treat") and the treats I included on my board--feel free to grab the doc! I used real Halloween treat bags from Wal-Mart to hold the "goodies" in.

Numbers, Numbers Everywhere!

Here is the bulletin board I had up during our place value unit. Throughout the course of the unit students brought in newspaper clippings, receipts, ads, junk mail, even a parents' pay stub--ANYTHING with numbers on it--and stapled it to the board! I created a scavenger hunt activity to go along with the board, though I actually didn't get to use it. Feel free to grab a copy of it from my Scribd page! :D

If you use this idea I would love to see your version!

So I fell off the wagon a little bit with Science Week. I posted the first two days but didn't the remaining 3. This week was a C-R-A-Z-Y week at school!!! I do still plan on posting! Please stay tuned and I will (hopefully) have those out this weekend! :D
